Toys for boys and toys for girls have different appeals in nature. Although toys are categorized separately by what girls and boys like to play with, there are similarities between how boys and girls play. There are animals, dolls and action figures, educational and puzzle games, and art craft supplies that both boys and girls are known to play with. Typical cool toys for boys tend to be vehicles, building toys, or action figures.

The Lego building pieces are famous for its mass appeal among young boys. There have been hundreds of box sets produced over the years, each with its own theme and style. Not only do young boys enjoy them, but there are many cases of adult men who like to play with these construction pieces as well, with or without their child. Generally Lego pieces are marketed to boys between the ages of six and twelve. They provide the challenge of building them, putting them together for a scene and pretend play fun, not to mention the cool factor of how the finished sets look like in the end. Lego pieces have also evolved into a sort of collector’s item for the more hardcore fans, implying that people of all ages can appreciate the appeal of Legos.

Another cool toy boys tend to cherish is posable action figures. Action figures are made of plastic and are often based on characters from movies, comic books, video games, or television programs. They are usually marketed towards boys and male collectors. Redressable action figures are sometimes referred to as action dolls as a distinction from those which have all or most of their clothes molded on. Action figures are particularly popular with boys because they represent traditional masculine traits closely associated within our own society. While most commonly marketed as a children’s toy, the action figure has grown wide acceptance as an adult collector item, much like the Lego pieces.

One of the most popular and cool toy for boys is the infamous Rubik’s Cube. The Rubik’s Cube is a 3-D mechanical puzzle invented in the 1970s and licensed in 1980 to be released as a toy. In a traditionally Rubik’s Cube, each of the six faces are a solid color of white, red, blue, orange, green and yellow. Each side is split into nine squares covered by a sticker of one of the solid colors. A pivot mechanism at the center of the cube enables each face to turn independently, mixing up the colors as a result. The puzzle is to be solved by twisting the square so that each face returns back to a solid color. Since its introduction, millions of cubes have been sold and won awards of Game of the Year and Best Puzzle of the Year. It is widely considered to be the world’s best-selling toy.

Toys that require kids to think differently usually make the best toys. These examples have essentially basic principles behind their concept. What makes these toys cool and appealing is the simplicity and the versatility. For boys, anything could be made into a cool toy if they’re allowed to figure out, solve, and create on their own.
